The pre-start inspection

Ten minutes here has prevented a lot of expensive mornings. Do it on anything that's been sitting.

  1. Walk around it first and look underneath. Droppings, nesting material on the ground, chewed insulation, a midden at a tire or under the frame.
  2. Open the hood before you touch the key. Look on top of the engine, at the intake, and along the wiring and hose runs.
  3. Pull and inspect the air cleaner. If it's shredded or nested in, don't run it — replace it, and expect to find more elsewhere.
  4. Look through the radiator and cooler fins for packed nesting material. This is the one that causes overheating an hour into the job.
