Go look at the bottom corners of your garage door right now
This is the single most common rodent entry point in Odessa homes, and almost nobody checks it.
Here's the problem. A garage door has a rubber or vinyl bottom seal that presses flat against the slab. In the middle of the door, it seals well. At the two bottom corners, where the seal meets the vertical jamb, there is very often a small triangular gap — because the seal compresses in the middle and lifts slightly at the ends, and because the jamb weatherstripping stops short.
Look at those two corners from inside with the door closed and the light on outside. If you can see daylight, a rodent can get in. A mouse needs about ¼ inch. A rat needs about ½ inch.
Three things make it worse in Odessa specifically:
- Caliche soil movement. Soil shifting heaves and settles the slab, so a door that sealed flat five years ago now has a low spot. This is extremely common here and it's why "the garage was fine before" is usually true.
- A worn or hardened seal. West Texas sun destroys rubber. A seal that's gone stiff and cracked doesn't conform to the slab anymore.
- Damage. Backing into the door, a warped panel, a bent track — any of it opens a gap at an edge.
What to do: the fix is a combination of replacing the bottom seal, adding or replacing the vertical jamb weatherstripping, and — where the slab has a genuine low spot — installing a threshold or filling the void with rigid material rather than trying to make the seal stretch. What's drawing them into your garage
The garage is attractive for reasons that are easy to fix and easy to overlook.
Pet food. The single most reliable rodent attractant in an Odessa garage. A bag of dog food, even a closed one, is a food source — rodents chew through paper and plastic without difficulty. Move it into a hard, sealed container with a lid — metal or heavy rigid plastic. This one change does more than most people expect.
Bird seed. Same problem, and worse, because seed spills.
Livestock and wildlife feed. Very common on West Odessa, Gardendale, and rural-edge properties. Feed sacks on a garage or barn floor are the anchor an entire rodent population organizes around.
Grass seed, fertilizer, and garden supplies. Rodents will work on all of it.
Stored food and drinks. Cases of soda, pantry overflow, canned goods — the packaging is the target as much as the contents.
Trash and recycling kept in the garage, especially with food residue.
Cardboard, paper, and stored boxes. Not food — nesting material, and excellent cover.
Clutter against the walls. Rodents travel edges. Boxes, tools, and bins stacked against the wall create a protected highway around the entire garage where nothing is ever disturbed.
A working refrigerator or freezer. Warmth behind it plus a drip pan for water. A classic nest site.
Water. A leaking hose bib, a water heater drip, or condensation. In a West Texas summer, water may be a bigger draw than food.
None of this is a criticism — it's how every garage in Odessa is used. It just means the garage needs to be treated as part of the house, not as outdoor storage.

The Odessa-specific pattern: the lot next door
Here's something we see constantly and nobody writes about.
A vacant lot or field next to your property gets mowed, cleared, or graded — and within days you have rodents in your garage. The cover those animals were living in disappeared, and they moved to the nearest structure with food and shelter. Your garage is the nearest structure.
Same thing happens after land clearing for construction, after a hard freeze kills back the cover, and after an irrigated field or pasture stops being watered.

Effective exclusion uses rigid, chew-proof material — galvanized steel mesh, hardware cloth, sheet metal, and mortar — sometimes with foam as a secondary air seal behind the metal, never as the barrier itself.
Should I put out poison in the garage?
It's a poor choice in a garage specifically, because that's where pets, children, and stored food all are, and because a poisoned rodent commonly dies inside the wall or the attic above. It also leaves the entry point open, so the garage refills. Trapping in pet-inaccessible positions plus sealing the openings addresses both the animals present and the ones that would replace them.
